Stockton girl dies in car crash; grieving family raises money for funeral

Friends of a Stockton family who lost their 11-year-old daughter when a car full of children under the legal driving age crashed into a tree have set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for funeral expenses.

The page set up for Queen Norwood’s family has raised nearly $3,000 as of Tuesday afternoon.

Organizer Dorrell Wesson wrote: “Queen, affectionately known as Queenie, is a beautiful, intelligent, shining star who left this earth far too soon for those of us who know and love her. Queenie leaves behind her mother Lanequia (NeNe) and father Tremaine (Man Man), who first and foremost need encouraging prayers and support as they process this unspeakable grief.”

Stockton police said officers were called to a building in the 5800 block of North El Dorado Street near St. Mary’s High School around 7:45 a.m. Sunday for a report of a vehicle colliding with a tree.

Officers found Norwood and five other children — two ages 13, two ages 14 and one age 15 — at the scene of the crash. Norwood was taken to a local hospital, where she died from injuries sustained in the crash. The other five children were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

According to Officer David Scott, a spokesman for the Stockton Police Department, there were probably no adults in the car at the time of the accident.

Investigators are still trying to find out how the children got into the car, what factors may have led to the accident and who was behind the wheel.

Norwood was a student at McKinley Elementary School in south Stockton.

Michelle Rodriguez, superintendent of the Stockton Unified School District, said counseling and support services are available for students and staff grieving Norwood’s death.

“We deeply regret the tragic accident that occurred this weekend. Any time we lose a student, it affects the entire SUSD community,” Rodriguez said. “Please join us in wishing the family peace and comfort during this difficult time.”
