Both Mariah Carey’s mother, Patricia Carey, and the singer’s sister, Alison Carey, died over the weekend.

“I am heartbroken to have lost my mother this past weekend. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister also lost her life that same day,” the singer said in a statement to the Daily News.

“I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away,” the 55-year-old continued. “I am grateful for everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

The causes of death of both women have not been disclosed. Patricia was 87, Alison 63.

Carey described her relationship with her mother, a Juilliard-trained opera singer and voice teacher, in her memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, as a mixture of “pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment.”

“It was never just black and white – it was a whole rainbow of emotions,” she wrote.

The book was also dedicated to the singer’s mother.

“And to Pat, my mother, who despite everything I think did the best she could,” Carey wrote. “I will always love you as much as I can.”

The Grammy winner was also estranged from Alison, who sued her along with her older brother Morgan for defamation over abuse and drug allegations in the 2020 book. According to Reuters, her brother’s lawsuit was ultimately dismissed.

“I had to stop letting (my family) hurt me. That helped me. I’m sure it’s safer for me emotionally and physically to have no contact with my (siblings),” she wrote.

Friend and advocate David Baker told the Hudson Valley Times Union that Alison Carey died at her home in Coxsackie. He said she was in hospice care and did not provide further details.

Carey’s father, Alfred Roy Carey, died in 2002. Her parents divorced when Carey was three years old.
