Chaos erupts at Camden school board meeting as calls for president’s dismissal are heard

There is apparent discord in the Camden School District: Some parents and students are calling for the school board president to be fired after the district settled a $2 million lawsuit alleging an inappropriate relationship with a student.

FOX 29’s Dawn Timmeney attended a very chaotic meeting regarding the district on Tuesday night.

The evening began with a protest rally in front of the high school, and the actual gathering began and ended just as it had begun: extremely contentious, with numerous disruptions and, at times, pure chaos.

People were screaming, booing and blowing their whistles before the Camden School Board meeting even opened.

“Since when do we tolerate injustice… let me say it again… since when do we tolerate injustice?” said one resident.

“I’m shaking because I’m angry,” said 12th-grader Damien Irizarry.

People flocked to the Camden High School auditorium demanding the dismissal or resignation of school board chairman Wasim Muhammad.

The meeting comes two months after the school district reached a $2 million settlement with a former student who accused it of sexual assault in a civil lawsuit.

The jury found that he had “recklessly or intentionally displayed extreme and outrageous conduct,” but found that he had not sexually abused the then 15-year-old.

His accuser, Salema Robinson’s attorney, spoke on her behalf and read part of the following statement. “Every day I have to struggle to function,” read Jeff Fritz, Salema Robinson’s attorney. “I am plagued by memories and nightmares.”

A member of Wasim Muhammad’s family attempted to speak during the meeting, but was interrupted by the violent crowd.

A woman standing at the side of the stage was involved in some sort of scuffle before Muhammad escorted her out.

Complete chaos then broke out before the meeting was declared over.

After the dust settled, Muhammad’s lawyer spoke to reporters and said the whole ordeal was to be expected.

“He will not resign,” said Troy Archie, Muhammad’s attorney. “He wants to continue serving in office, I understand it was controversial, but he was cleared of any sexual misconduct in his lawsuit.”

“I think it will come up, but he’ll have to overshadow it with good deeds,” Archie continued.

Those present vowed not to stop fighting for the removal of Muhammad.

Governor Phil Murphy also called for his resignation, citing the horrific and abhorrent nature of the allegations.

No decision was made on Tuesday evening.
