College student moves due to move-in conditions at Tallahassee apartment complex

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – With college students moving in and the first day of classes approaching, some students had to move out of their apartments at the start of the semester due to many problems, including mold.

A Florida State freshman moved into the West 10 apartment complex last week and was thrilled to find that the experience turned out to be the opposite of what she had hoped for.

FSU student Lynden Bartholomew said there was mold, cockroaches and what looked like mouse droppings throughout her apartment.

In addition, Bartholomew filed a complaint with the apartment management company, but stated that not enough had been done to make the apartment habitable, which led her to terminate her lease and move elsewhere with the help of an attorney.

“When you’re pregnant, you just feel really defeated when you’re promised this really clean, really nice apartment, and you get there and it’s just not what you expected at all,” Bartholomew said. “It’s just very daunting because juggling that with school starting soon, getting everything sorted out, and your parents only being able to stay for a limited time, it was hard and heartbreaking.”

WCTV has reached out to management at Forum at Tallahassee and West 10 for comment.
