Louisville starts with Austin Peay and wants to build on last season | National

Jeff Brohm’s first season as Louisville’s head coach has been a resounding success. The Cardinals finished the season with 10 wins – the first time they’ve won by double digits in a season since 2013 – and made the ACC championship game. The effort to build on those successes in Brohm’s second season begins Saturday afternoon, when Louisville hosts Austin Peay in non-conference play. Brohm was well aware of the notable upsets in the first few NCAA games last week and doesn’t want his heavily favored team to take anything for granted. “We had two upsets last weekend, which just shows the balance in college football,” Brohm said. “If you come on the field and don’t play your best game, you lose.” Louisville’s biggest addition this year is quarterback Tyler Shough, a transfer from Texas Tech who has taken over the starting position. Shough completed 67 of 111 passes for 746 yards and seven touchdowns, with four interceptions, in four games for the Red Raiders last season. “He goes out there every day and makes plays,” Brohm said. “He has a great command of the offense and the pocket. He knows how to get the ball up front to our playmakers.” Brohm said defensive line is his team’s deepest position and singled out Ashton Gillotte as a player who had an “incredible” training camp. Austin Peay has a new head coach in Jeff Faris, who came over from UCLA after serving as tight ends coach under Chip Kelly. The Governors won the United Athletic Conference title last year, but only 43 players from last year’s roster are back this season. The key returning players for Austin Peay are offensive lineman Chandler Kirton and defensive lineman Hosea Knifeley Jr. “It takes time to get used to a whole new coaching staff,” Kirton told the Clarksville Leaf Chronicle. “But I think Coach Faris has done a great job of bringing in coaches that are going to coach you hard.” – Field Level Media
