11-year-old girl dies in accident after 6 children go for a joyride in SUV

An 11-year-old girl has died when a group of children under the legal driving age went joyriding in an SUV and crashed into a tree in Stockton, California. PEOPLE.

On Sunday (Aug. 25), Stockton police officers responded to a report that a vehicle had struck a tree. Police said they found five girls, ages 11 to 15, and a 13-year-old boy at the scene. A child who had been thrown from the vehicle was found unresponsive, a first responder said.

The children were taken to hospital, where the 11-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries. The victim was identified as Queen Marie Stacy Norwooda student at McKinley Elementary School in Stockton.

“We deeply regret the tragic accident that occurred this weekend,” said Superintendent Michelle Rodriguez it said in a statement.

“Every time we lose a student, it affects the entire SUSD community,” she wrote. “We offer counseling and support to our students and staff. Please join us in wishing the family peace and comfort during this difficult time.”

Spokesperson for the Stockton Police Department Omer Edhah called the accident “alarming.”

“These are all very young children, between the ages of 11 and 15, and unfortunately one of them has succumbed to his injuries. That is worrying,” said Edhah. “And our message to the public is: be careful where your children are, be careful where your car keys are, be careful who you give your keys to, and just be vigilant all around – we certainly don’t want to be in a situation like that again.”

According to police, there were probably no adults present at the scene of the accident. It is unclear who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident and how the minors were able to get into the SUV.

There are currently no charges against the children’s parents.
