Who is the most underrated player on Charlotte’s roster?

For this week’s edition of the Charlotte Hornets On SI Roundtable, our team selects what they believe to be the most underrated player on the Hornets roster.

Nick Richards is a strong candidate for the most underrated player on the Charlotte Hornets roster. His efficiency at the basket and his presence on the rebound (career-best 8.0 RPG in 2023-2024) often need more credit. Richards has the physical tools and athleticism to be a disruptive force on defense, especially with his shot-blocking skills. While he is still developing certain aspects of his game, he has shown improvement on offense, particularly in his aggressiveness when attacking the basket. He posted a career-high 9.7 PPG on 69.1% shooting, also a career-best. Richards’ contributions may be dwarfed by the Hornets’ more prominent players, but his efficiency, energy, and defensive skills make him an invaluable piece of the puzzle. His true impact on the team could show up as he continues to develop and mature.

He has played so little in recent years due to injuries that I think people have forgotten his impact on the game. In Hornets on SI’s own X poll, Martin received the fewest votes for most important backup behind Mann, Richards and Grant Williams, which shows how low his standing is among fans. Martin is still this team’s best perimeter defender and brings an infectious energy when he’s on the court. He can play PG, SG or SF, showing his versatility. I still wouldn’t rule out Martin getting into the Hornets’ starting lineup ahead of new addition Josh Green in the offseason.

Is it crazy to think Williams could make a jump into the LaMelo Ball/Brandon Miller “face of the franchise” conversation this season? Probably. But with the NBA relying on versatile big men, Williams has an opportunity to cement his place in the upper echelon of the NBA hierarchy with an impressive (and healthy) third season. His basket-protecting and play-finishing skills will be of great value to a Hornets team that looks to play tough on defense and outside-in on offense. I expect a big jump for Williams in the Charles Lee era, and if that success comes, he won’t be underrated for long.
