Pittsburgh Steelers release lightning-fast former Eagles wide receiver

The Pittsburgh Steelers have released former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Quez Watkins. Watkins is another wide receiver to be released, and he could return to the practice squad. However, he has struggled to show his skills on special teams, and that has been his undoing, as Scotty Miller and Dez Fitzpatrick have proven more there.

Watkins was selected in the sixth round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Eagles out of Southern Mississippi. Coming out, he ran a blistering 40-yard dash, clocking a time of 4.35 seconds. During his years in Philadelphia, he toyed with the idea of becoming a returner, but never quite made it as a wide receiver, struggling with route running and drops.

Pittsburgh has many receivers similar to Watkins, such as Miller and Roman Wilson. He missed a punt in the first preseason game against the Houston Texans and never grabbed enough rebounds in the stadium to make up for it. Calvin Austin III is expected to be the Steelers’ punt returner again.

The Steelers have to decide whether to keep five or six wide receivers on the final roster, but with another player likely coming in from the outside, there was simply no room on the roster for Watkins after a quiet summer. The Steelers signed Watkins in April to patch up the wide receiver room in hopes he would make a leap forward, but that never panned out for the Steelers.
