Midfielder acquitted after fatal shooting of 16-year-old girl in Birmingham

A 28-year-old man has been acquitted of murder charges after he shot and killed a 16-year-old girl in Birmingham during spring break last year.

A Jefferson County jury found Arnold Laterrant Fuller not guilty in the killing of Jada White, a student at Jackson-Olin High School, according to court records released Tuesday.

Fuller was also charged with attempted murder for injuring a second young girl during the same incident. The jury found him guilty of the lesser offense of attempted first-degree assault.

The trial began on August 19 and the jury announced its verdict on Thursday.

Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Michael Streety set Fuller’s sentencing in the attempted assault case for October. He remains incarcerated.

The second man charged in the shooting, 23-year-old Daemar Martin, has not yet been tried.

Fuller was represented by attorneys Chris Daniel and John Lentine and Assistant District Attorneys Isabella Colombo and Blake Owens.

The fatal shooting occurred on March 29, 2023.

Officers from the city’s West Precinct received several shot spotter alerts in and around the 3000 block of Avenue F in Ensley around 2:30 a.m. that Wednesday. When they arrived at the scene, they found Jada unconscious on a sidewalk in a residential area.

Birmingham fire and rescue services pronounced her dead at the scene.

A few blocks away, officers found another young girl in a vehicle. She had also been shot, but her injuries were not life-threatening. A young man was also in the vehicle, but was not injured.

Police had previously stated that Jada was shot while she was with a group of teenagers who were possibly vandalizing a house and car, and that this appeared to be the motive for her death.

The suspects were acquaintances of the homeowner whose property was vandalized, but police said the homeowner was in no way involved in the deadly violence that followed.

“At 2:24 a.m., I don’t know what a 16-year-old was doing outside with three other youths who had all been drinking alcohol,” Police Chief Scott Thurmond said earlier. “They damage a vehicle and then get shot at.”

“Where were the parents? Did their parents know where they were? Did their parents know they were drinking alcohol? Did their parents know they were out at 2:24 a.m.?” he said. “I don’t think so, and that’s a problem.”

“One of the women was unconscious and vomiting in our police car, she vomited here so she couldn’t talk to us,” he said. “They are minors and we can’t find their parents so they can come here and we can question them.”

“One of the women even told us, ‘I don’t have time to deal with this right now. I have to be home by 7 a.m.,'” Thurmond said. “Well, 7 a.m. is not an acceptable curfew.”
