Red Sox have discussed calling up an up-and-coming top talent in September

The Boston Red Sox have struggled lately, losing their last five games, including a sweep of the Arizona Diamondbacks, leaving them 5.5 games out of a wild card spot with about a month left in the regular season.

While the Red Sox could benefit from a number of reinforcements in their lineup and rotation, their offense could use the right-hander to provide a little more balance.

When September comes, Boston will have two new open spots on the roster, and with the talent in Triple-A, they have some options, including Kristian Campbell, a fourth-round pick in 2023.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora said his staff had even discussed the possibility of signing the 22-year-old in the next few days.

“We’ve talked about it and obviously versatility comes into play,” Cora said (via MassLive). “We’re also very left-handed. So we’re trying to balance it out. The whole all-around, fast guy comes into play too. So we’ve talked about it for a couple of weeks.”

The 22-year-old has had a meteoric rise through Boston’s farm system, starting at High-A Greenville earlier this season and ending up at Triple-A Worcester, and he’s given his all at every level.

In 56 games with Double-A Portland, Campbell hit .362 with a 1.045 OPS, eight home runs, 35 RBIs and 17 stolen bases. Now, in five games with Worcester, he hit .348 with a 1.052 OPS, two home runs, nine RBIs and one stolen base.

Although he is playing well, Cora admitted that now is probably not the right time for Campbell to make his major league debut.

“We talk about what he does, but not in this situation,” Cora said.

That will have to wait, but there are plenty of interesting options for the September draft.
