The Challenge Season 40, Episode 3: How to watch and stream for free

Season 40 of The Challenge, also known as “Battle of the Eras,” has already been full of drama on screen and in personal life, and the stars lugged their baggage out of the Challenge house and into the real world this week* ahead of Episode 3, “A Fatal Era.” The new episode of The Challenge 40 airs Wednesday, August 28 (8/28/2024) at 8 p.m. ET.

In episode 3 of “The Challenge” 40, the Eras must work together to protect their team. But in the next challenge, players can expect a classic and disgusting challenge “feast,” according to MTV.

It looks like Laurel Stucky – who has already clashed with rival Cara Maria Sorbello on the show and on social media this season – will continue to be at the center of the drama in Season 40. The winner of the battle to find a new champion came under fire from Ryan Kehoe on X (formerly Twitter) over the weekend following Episode 2. Kehoe told her, “Nobody liked you or wanted you there” and accused her of being a notorious liar after Laurel accused him of being $14,000 behind in taxes and sending them to a collection agency.

*Pun absolutely intended

What happened on The Challenge last week?

Fans can watch all previous episodes of The Challenge: Battle of the Eras Season 40 on Philo.

Some quick cuts skipped the part where players learned who they would face in elimination and which classic challenge elimination they would be playing. The eliminations were each symbolic of the era in which they were first introduced and included Balls In (Era I), Pole Wrestle (Era II), Hall Brawl (Era III) and Take Shelter (Era IV), but Arena players were not matched up with eliminations from eras other than their own.

The evening was fairly predictable, with many of the matchups heavily tipped in favor of the physically stronger competitor. Despite much big talk, did Paulie ever really stand a chance against the comparatively huge Theo in Hall Brawl? Was there a universe where tiny, there-only-for-a-vacation Katie defeated Elimination Queen Aneesa (despite some cuts to make it look like she had a chance).

One of the more exciting matchups was the Pole Wrestle between Derrick and Mark, where Mark, who clearly outsizes Derrick, lost to Derrick’s athleticism and stamina. Nurys Mateo, a fan favorite from Season 39, also gave his best friend and eventual arch-rival Olivia Kaiser a hard time in the Hall Brawl, despite being at an obvious disadvantage. But Olivia ultimately prevailed, robbing (or sparing) fans of further drama between Olivia and Nurys for the rest of the season.

Despite some passionate pleas in the previous episode, Laurel and Johnny ultimately sent Cara to the elimination round, while CT and Rachel sent Aneesa. This set a business-as-usual tone for the early stages of the season, but with eight contestants already sent home, the dynamics in the house are sure to change dramatically going forward. With big names like Amanda, Paulie and Nurys already gone, the question is, who will take their place?

At the end of the episode, TJ warned that how you treat other players will be important this season. The eliminated players were given the opportunity to rate their teammates on a scale of 1 (or 0) being the worst to 5 being the best. It is not yet known how this parting shot will affect the game.

What is The Challenge: Battle of the Eras about?

According to MTV, “The Challenge is a reality competition that features a series of contests for the chance to win money. Contestants must endure brutal challenges, devastating elimination rounds, steamy affairs and bitter rivalries.”

But season 40 of “The Challenge” is about so much more than that. It’s a giant love letter to more than three decades of MTV’s “Real World,” “Road Rules” and, of course, “The Challenge,” bringing together the biggest icons from the show’s many eras for a titanic battle.
