Water polo selects team captains for 2024

Bronx, NY – (August 27, 2024) – With the start of the 2024 season imminent, the Fordham water polo team has selected seniors Mark Katsev, Lucas Nieto JasnyAnd Luca Silvestri as team captains for the coming year.

Katsev and Nieto Jasny have competed in all three MAWPC championships for the Rams, with Silvestri participating in the last two after transferring to Fordham from Westcliff University.

Katsev has played in 84 games over his first three seasons, recording 40 goals, 32 assists and 18 steals. Last season, he set new career highs in assists (15), steals (8) and blocks (6) and was named to the ACWPC All-Academic Team for the second time.

Nieto Jasny, a former All-MAWPC honorable mention, is captain of the team for the second consecutive year. Since joining the team, he has been a model of consistency for the Rams, scoring 117 points (2021), 113 points (2022) and 116 points (2023) in three seasons. He has scored at least 55 goals in each of his three seasons, setting a personal best of 69 as a freshman. In 2023, Nieto Jasny set personal bests with 60 assists and 15 blocks and was named MAWPC Player of the Week once. In the last 25 years of Fordham water polo, his 180 career goals rank fifth while his 166 assists rank third. He has also been named to the ACWPC All-Academic Team three times and CSC Academic All-District twice.

Silvestri was named an honorable mention All-America selection by the ACWPC in 2023 after being named a First Team All-MAWPC selection during the regular season and earning three MAWPC weekly honors. Last season, he led the Rams in goals (67), steals (52) and blocks (17) and dished out 32 assists. He also scored 22 power play goals. At the MAWPC Championship, Silvestri was named to the Second Team All-Championship after scoring five times in two games, including a hat trick in the championship game against Navy. In two seasons with the Rams, he has amassed 121 goals, 53 assists, 81 steals and 24 blocks.

Fordham enters the 2024 season as three-time defending MAWPC champions and is again the preseason favorite in the MAWPC preseason poll. The Rams are ranked 14th in the CWPA national preseason poll.th in the country.
