The Detroit Pistons are the last remaining team and why that matters

Usually it’s not a good thing when the Detroit Pistons are alone in a category.

Worst team of the last five seasons, longest losing streak in a single season, only team to be drafted fifth three years in a row; these are the categories in which the Pistons have exclusively moved in recent years.

But there is one positive category they are currently the only team in. The Detroit Pistons are the only team in the NBA with salary cap space after Utah signed Lauri Markkanen to a big contract extension.

But is that important?

The Pistons have just over $10 million in salary cap space left, making them the only team in the NBA with that much cap space. Detroit is already over the salary cap, so it doesn’t need to do anything, and Trajan Langdon has made it clear he’s in no hurry to do anything.

While this is not the amount they could spend on signing a top player, it will come in handy later in one of the following ways:

-Salary dumping

The Pistons have already done this with Tim Hardaway Jr. and could use their remaining cap space to take on another unwanted contract in exchange for draft assets. Langdon is slowly rebuilding the Pistons’ depleted stock and has already added three second-round picks since taking over.

For those who want the Pistons to field the most competitive roster possible, or those who would rather sign young talent, this wouldn’t be the most exciting use of the money.

– Sign another free agent

We talked about some free agents who recently came off the waivers list, two of whom had ties to Langdon and his former team.

Matt Ryan has since renegotiated a one-year deal with the Pelicans and is therefore no longer available, but there are still guys like Markelle Fultz and Dennis Smith who could help fill the void at the backup point guard position.

The Pistons have enough to sign everyone left, but may want to keep that spot open for a larger transfer.

-A big trade

At some point before next year’s trade deadline, the Pistons will likely trade Tim Hardaway Jr., whose contract is expiring and who could be a useful veteran for a contender looking to add depth.

Adding his salary to the Pistons’ salary cap would put them at over $26 million, which is just one way they could use their salary cap in a trade.

Langdon is wise to wait, as he is in no hurry to spend the money and it may prove more valuable in other dealings later.

With over $10 million at their disposal, the Pistons are the last team in the NBA with salary cap space. Let’s hope Langdon can take advantage of it.
