Sturgis rally tax revenue totals $1.4 million, down from last year • South Dakota Searchlight

Tax revenues related to the recently concluded 2024 Sturgis Motorcycle Rally totaled $1.4 million, a 3% decrease from the previous year, according to estimates released Tuesday by the state Tax Office.

State sales tax revenues were $790,805, state tourism tax revenues were $271,322, and city sales tax revenues were $337,374.

The collections came from 896 temporary providers, 17 fewer than last year.

The agency also breaks down the numbers by region. The northern Black Hills, which includes Sturgis and all other communities in Meade and Lawrence counties, collected $992,067 in taxes from 699 dealers, an 8% decrease from the previous year.

In the southern Black Hills, which includes Rapid City, Custer, Hill City and Keystone, there were 197 temporary dealers who collected $407,434 in taxes, a 12% increase over the previous year.

According to additional statistics on the 2024 rally, at least 12 people died in motorcycle accidents in South Dakota during the rally or in the days immediately before or after the official rally dates.

According to the Highway Patrol, there were also 155 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol, 444 arrests for drug offenses, 54 non-injury traffic accidents and 35 injury accidents in western South Dakota during the rally.
