Today, more and more of the world’s most important water systems are coming under pressure. Many of these systems, which serve a range of ecosystems, communities and industries, including agriculture, are drying up or becoming polluted through overuse. Climate change is also contributing to this challenge.

This is one of the reasons why at Mondelēz International we support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a particular focus on the availability and sustainable management of water for all. You can find our position on water on our website.

Our business relies on water in many ways – from growing and sourcing the raw materials we use to running our facilities. At every stage, clean water helps us protect our people, secure our supplies and safeguard our products. To encourage more responsible use of water, we need to look beyond our own facilities and ensure it both irrigates the goods we use and is available to everyone in the communities where we operate. To make a positive impact, it’s important that we partner on water management with the organizations that contribute to the same watersheds as we do.

Within a watershed

2023 in review

For now, our water management strategy remains focused on achieving our 2025 target of reducing our water consumption in priority locations in water-stressed areas.

To this end, we have implemented a water efficiency program based on strategies and initiatives from our focus sites, enabling us to reduce our absolute water consumption at the focus sites by approximately (15)% by 2023 (compared to 2018). (9).

The main focuses of this program include:

  • Water audits and assessments
  • Installation of water-saving devices and technologies
  • Investments in improved reuse and recycling systems
  • Leakage and water loss prevention
  • Employee training
  • Data monitoring and reporting on improvements and cost savings
  • Benchmarking against industry standards
  • Monitoring and reporting on evolving regulations

Our plant in Salinas, Mexico, has implemented a reverse osmosis and water treatment plant to improve water use efficiency and recycling.

Our factory in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, has implemented a recycling project to reclaim water from processing and reuse it in utilities, saving thousands of cubic metres of water in 2023.

Our Recife, Brazil plant completed several wastewater treatment projects focused on recovering condensate from industrial air conditioning systems and moisture recovery from temperature control systems in cookie dough manufacturing, saving thousands of cubic meters of water for reuse each year.

At our Lad Krabang plant in Thailand, increased water conservation efforts during a prolonged dry season resulted in reduced water consumption.

OUTLOOK

Towards our 2025 goal, we continue to identify watersheds at risk using a process based on our global water risk assessment and business priorities for our operations and supply chain.

In the coming years, we aim to develop detailed roadmaps and action plans for key basins, in consultation with local stakeholders, to identify and respond to local water risks across the catchments of our entire supply chain.

Water stewardship will continue to be an important aspect of our governance. Our employees are responsible for implementing our public objectives in areas such as board oversight, public dialogue, compliance and accountability. We will also continue to consider future water risks and impacts in our strategic decisions.

(9) Priority sites are considered sites located in a high or extremely high water risk zone defined as of 2021. This metric is measured according to our internal health, safety and environmental water supply system for priority sites. The information reported excludes gum brands from developed markets that were divested as of October 1, 2023 (which is different from previous years). We have recalculated our base year of 2018 (where applicable) and the most recent years of 2021, 2022 and 2023 for year-on-year comparison. The information reported is based on the most recent estimate; an independent third-party verification is in process. Any required updates will be included in the ESG Fact Sheet and can be found in our ESG Reports and Disclosure Reports archive once SGS verification is complete.
