Mariah Carey’s Mama, Patriciaand sister, Alisondied on the same day last weekend, according to PEOPLE.

“I am heartbroken to have lost my mother this past weekend. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life the same day,” the “We Belong Together” hitmaker said in an exclusive statement to the outlet. “I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away. I am grateful for everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Details about the causes of Patricia and Alison’s deaths are currently unknown. Mariah inherited her singing talent from Patricia, 87, a former opera singer and voice teacher. In her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” the five-time Grammy winner described her complicated relationship with her mother, saying it caused her a lot of pain and confusion.

“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It was never just black and white – it was a whole rainbow of emotions,” she wrote. “Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment. A complicated love connects my heart to my mother’s.”

Mariah also dedicated part of her memoir to Patricia. “And Pat, my mother, who despite everything, I think did the best she could. I will always love you as much as I can,” she added.

Mariah and her sister also had a difficult relationship. In the book, she described how she became estranged from Alison and her brother. Morganand explained that it was “emotionally and physically safer for me to avoid any contact.”
