Dutchie and Last Prisoner Project reach $2 million fundraising goal Leading technology platform matches $1 million in donations to end victimless cannabis criminalization

Dutchie, the technology platform for the cannabis commerce industry, and Last Prisoner Project (LPP), a nonprofit organization dedicated to repairing the harms of the failed war on drugs and releasing people incarcerated for cannabis offenses, today announced that their $2 million fundraising goal has been met. Over the past two years, Dutchie has coordinated donations from dispensary partners and cannabis consumers to LPP by placing a call to action on all receipts and matching $1 million in donations. Dutchie’s work has also included coordinating and supporting several of LPP’s efforts, including criminal record expungement, rehabilitation assistance, criminal justice public policy reform, coordination of industry events, and technological opportunities to exponentially increase donations.

“Dutchie is committed to recognizing and repairing the harm caused by cannabis prohibition, and we are thrilled to have reached our fundraising goal for the Last Prisoner Project,” said Tim Barash, CEO of Dutchie. “We cannot undo past injustices experienced by people and communities due to decades of failed cannabis policy, but we can work to support those who have been harmed. We remain committed to our shared vision of freeing those behind bars for non-violent cannabis offenses, and thanks to the efforts of the entire Dutchie ecosystem, we have been able to scale our impact and make tangible progress.”

More specifically, the funds raised and donations collected by Dutchie’s partner dispensaries have helped arrange pro bono legal representation with the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers through LPP’s Cannabis Justice Initiative, saving clients from more than 100 years in prison, including four individuals serving life sentences.

Donations also supported the creation of the State of Cannabis Justice Report, which tracks the progress each state has to make in repairing the harm caused by prohibition and the war on drugs, and the Pardons to Progress and Pen to Right History campaigns, which organized the sending of more than 11,000 letters to governors and the president urging them to show more clemency.

“We are proud of the funds we have been able to raise through this partnership,” said Mary Bailey, LPP’s executive director. “During this campaign, we have been able to repair the harms of cannabis prohibition by driving important reforms in criminal justice and drug policy. Our work would not be possible without the support of the legal industry and those who drive it, like Dutchie.”

Despite reaching the matching goal, Dutchie is committed to a long and fruitful partnership with the LPP to advance needed criminal justice reforms and will continue to leverage its network of thousands of dispensaries and partners to provide even greater support to the LPP’s ongoing initiatives. In addition to this partnership, Dutchie’s social program continues to support BIPOC and women-led dispensaries through training and marketing grants. Dutchie is also a member of the Minority Cannabis Business Association.
