The Cubs did something last night they haven’t done in over 100 years

The Chicago Cubs went crazy at the plate last night, and they went crazy on the bases TOO.

The Cubs stole a whopping eight bases in their win over the Pirates last night, something they haven’t done in 113 years:

The game planners must have noticed something about the Mitch Keller-Yasmani Grandal combination, because the Cubs stole SEVEN bases against this duo alone (even though Keller only lasted four innings) and added an eighth stolen base later in the game, making a small piece of history for the century.

Grandal is actually one of the two or three worst catchers when it comes to directing the running game, and Keller is also well below average as a pitcher, so that had to be checked off the calendar.

Even if you know you want to steal a lot of bases on a particular night, you still need to Strictly speaking get to the base and Strictly speaking complete the steals to make it count. That’s why the Cubs haven’t stolen eight bases in over 100 years – it’s hard to do that much in a single game!

The Cubs, by the way, are 8th in baseball with 120 stolen bases (remember earlier this year when they stole NO bases? That was crazy). They’re also just 3 steals behind 5th and 12 steals ahead of 9th. The Cubs are also pretty efficient: they’ve only been caught 23 times, and you have to go down to 14th to find a team that’s been caught fewer times (the Dodgers with 22, but they successfully stole 29 fewer bases!).
