Saints are advised to end the experiment with Trevor Penning as an emergency free agency signing is needed just before the final cuts

Could the New Orleans Saints make a last-minute move to give the offense some security at the right tackle position with Trevor Penning struggling?

Penning, a first-round pick by the team in 2022, was ousted from the left tackle position this summer by first-round rookie Taliese Fuaga and moved to the right side, where he has been under observation ever since.

Now observers like Bleacher Report have suggested getting experienced help that could potentially start immediately, such as Billy Turner:

“During the preseason, the Saints had a position battle at right tackle between Trevor Penning and Olisaemeka Udoh. Frankly, neither of them is a good option, so it wouldn’t hurt to bring in Turner and see if he can be a backup.”

For the Saints, it’s probably a question of whether an available winger could even take over the offense quickly enough now. Turner has over 70 starts under his belt, but it could be a tie with Penning, who at least still seems to have some first-round potential.

On the other hand, there’s this reaction from Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com to the last preseason game in New Orleans that really says it all: “After watching the Saints’ game tape, I’m not sure how the Saints can have confidence in Trevor Penning as a regular season starter. I counted at least four plays that could have been holding calls that referee Land Clark let go. Passing remains a major problem.”

The other option is Olisaemeka Udoh, but he has no experience on the right side and has not played there for the first team until recently.

The Saints have put themselves in a brutal situation at the right tackle position, much like the overall situation. On paper, they’d love to compete with Derek Carr, but it’s obvious the roster might not be good enough — and a Spencer Rattler era might be inevitable.

With Penning’s status considered a lost cause, the Saints will likely keep a close eye on the waiver list when making final cuts and then make a decision on an available player like Turner.
