You may have read headlines last week about Microsoft soon removing the Control Panel from Windows, but the death of the Control Panel has been greatly exaggerated. The inaccurate reports came from a single support document originally discovered by Neowin. Microsoft has now updated the support document to clarify that there is no danger of the Control Panel being removed from Windows any time soon.

“Control Panel is being phased out in favor of the Settings app,” Microsoft’s support announcement said last week. Although Microsoft has been working to move Control Panel elements into the Settings interface for over a decade, this seemingly small update to a support document sparked headlines saying Control Panel would be removed “soon.”

Many others reported that the end of Control Panel was near, but over the weekend Microsoft updated its support note to clarify that it was simply the continuing process of moving items to the Settings app.

“Many of the settings in Control Panel are currently being migrated to the Settings app,” Microsoft says. I asked the company to comment on the original and updated support notes, but Microsoft did not respond. The edge with a statement in time for publication.

Be that as it may, Microsoft has been moving more Control Panel settings to the Settings interface in recent months. Windows 11 is finally getting mouse settings that will let you bypass the Control Panel soon, eliminating another major reason to use the Control Panel.

However, many Windows users still prefer the Control Panel over the Settings interface. It offers many settings in an easy-to-use interface, so you don’t have to dig around in multiple layers to find what you’re looking for. Microsoft has refined its Settings interface since Windows 8, and made numerous overhauls in both Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The software giant still hasn’t added Control Panel to the list of deprecated Windows features, so it’s not going away anytime soon. Typically, Microsoft adds Windows features to this official list of deprecated features months or even years in advance to warn businesses and consumers about their removal.
