WASHINGTON – Faced with a new challenge from Vice President Kamala Harris, Donald Trump’s campaign team decided on Thursday to expand its staff to include longtime allies from his first two presidential candidacies.

Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s first campaign manager in the 2016 presidential election, is one of the new recruits. The relationship between him and Trump has been volatile over the years.

Trump fired Lewandowski as campaign manager in 2016, but he remained something of an informal adviser. In 2021, Trump’s political organization cut ties with Lewandowski after a Trump donor accused him of sexual misconduct. Lewandowski has denied the allegations.

“I have been with President @realDonaldTrump since day 1, worked for him in 2016 and 2020, and am excited to be back on the campaign team to help win in 2024,” Lewandowski said on X.

Tim Murtaugh, who was communications director for Trump’s 2020 campaign, will also join Trump’s third run for the White House, the former president’s campaign team confirmed in a statement on Thursday.

Other new additions – Taylor Budowich, Alex Pfeiffer and Alex Bruesewitz – have previously worked with MAGA, Inc., the Trump-aligned Super PAC.

These new advisers join the campaign after Harris spent the past few weeks chipping away at Trump’s lead in the polls over President Joe Biden, who withdrew from the race last month. They also come ahead of the Democratic National Convention, which begins next week.

The former president has not made any major changes to his leadership team, with senior advisers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita remaining responsible for the overall direction of the campaign.

In its statement, the campaign praised the new hires and said they would “help President Trump prosecute the case against Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.” It’s a swipe at Harris and other prominent Democrats who have long sought to portray the 2024 election as a race between California’s former attorney general and the former president, who has faced sweeping charges in four criminal cases.
