Controversial plans to expand state parks with amenities continue

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. – A proposal to add pickleball courts, golf courses and other amenities to several Florida state parks continues to face fierce criticism.

This even went so far that the Florida Department of Environmental Protection postponed the public meetings scheduled for Tuesday.

However, that does not stop environmental groups from raising their voices.

On Tuesday at 2 p.m., people will line the streets of Honeymoon Island State Park to protest the development.

“We are deeply concerned,” said Kira Barrera of the Suncoast Sierra Club. “We are very active and organized.”

The FDEP has proposed this plan, which could affect two state parks in the Tampa Bay region. The plan calls for four pickleball courts to be added to Honeymoon Island State Park, while Hillsborough River State Park could get four pickleball courts and a disc golf course.

For some people this would be a welcome change.

“I play pickleball, so maybe that has something to do with it, but I don’t have a big problem with it,” said Dunedin resident Kenneth Ciccarone.

The majority of people I spoke to said they were strongly opposed to the proposal.

“We think this proposal is absolutely ridiculous,” Barrera said.

“This is what I like. I like hiking here, swimming here and I like the dog beach. I would rather leave it as it is,” said Dunedin resident John Russell.

The groups will meet for a protest on Honeymoon Island on Tuesday, August 27th at 2 p.m.

The public meeting will be postponed until the week of August 2nd.
