Brazil’s Catholic University of Paraná continues its journey toward water justice

The university will soon have been a “Blue University” for a year, meaning an institution that officially recognizes water and sanitation as a human right, promotes public water and sewage services, and stops selling bottled water at municipal events.

During his visit, Suna spoke with doctoral students of theology and faculty members, including Father Dr. Elias Wolff, a key figure in the university’s continued journey to becoming a Blue University.

“The transformation of the Catholic University of Paraná is not just a symbolic victory; it reflects a deep institutional commitment to water justice,” Suna said. “The creation of the Water Club and the ongoing efforts to eliminate bottled water across campus are inspiring examples of how academic institutions can lead by example and promote sustainable practices.”

The Catholic University of Paraná’s commitment extends beyond its campus. Through initiatives such as “Lab Clima,” the university actively participates in environmental efforts, such as the cleanup of the heavily polluted Rio Belém. This project is a collaborative effort between students, faculty and local communities and demonstrates a shared commitment to climate justice and civic engagement.
