1:50 p.m., August 26, Update: Multiple agencies continued their search for a missing Kaua’i man in the waters off Nukoli’i Beach in Wailua on Monday.

Starting at 1 p.m., the Kaua’i Air 1 County helicopter and U.S. Coast Guard personnel searched for the missing man from the water and air.

The county also released photos of the search and the missing man, Gary Gushiken.

Original post: Multiple agencies continued their search for a missing Kaua’i man in the waters off Nukoli’i Beach in Wailua Monday morning.

Kaua’i police have identified the missing person as Gary Gushiken, 50, of Līhu’e, county officials reported.

Personnel from the Kaua’i Police Department, Kaua’i Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard, Ocean Safety Bureau, Kaua’i Search and Rescue, Department of Land and Natural Resources, and the KFD battalion chief on duty are responding to the incident. County air and marine resources are on standby, weather permitting.

According to a preliminary report, the Kaua’i Fire Department responded to a report of a missing snorkeler at Nukoli’i Beach around 6:40 p.m. on August 24. The man was about 100 yards offshore when he became separated from his group and disappeared. The air, land and sea search continued throughout the weekend. Rescue crews resumed the search Monday morning.

Volunteers from Life’s Bridges, a bereavement counseling service, were contacted to offer support to the missing person’s family.

Search updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
