A361 in Somerset closed for two days due to water mains works

A main road on the edge of the Somerset Levels will be closed for two days for inspection of the water main.

Wessex Water will close the A361 at Burrowbridge in both directions at the road bridge over the River Parrett on Tuesday and Wednesday between 08:00 (BST) and 17:00 (BST).

According to Wessex Water, the main water main in Burrowbridge was first installed in the 1960s and the sleeve designed to protect it is damaged, meaning the main could leak.

A Wessex Water spokesman said: “Road closures are always a last resort but in this case the closure is unavoidable due to the location of the main road and the surrounding network.”

There is a diversion via the A361 at Burrow Wall, Townsend, the A372 at Langport Road and the Parkway to Bridgwater.

The nearby roads Riverside and School Lane will also be closed to through traffic near the A361.

Access from the north side of the A361 closure will remain open to residents, businesses and emergency vehicles.

There will also be a diversion in place for this closure, connecting Riverside via the village of Thorngrove to the A372 at Westonzoyland.

The Wessex Water spokesman added: “By digging test holes within this A361 barrier, we can determine where connections can be made to the existing water main before any planned pipe replacement is planned.”

“We apologize for any inconvenience and have written extensively to customers and local businesses to inform them of this investigation.”
