It’s that time of year when all college and high school students go back to school, which means many of our local businesses are looking for people to fill the positions those students leave vacant as we head into the fall.

Mission Proper at Seven Hills Community Center is one of those local businesses.

“As summer comes to a close, we wish our amazing team members Addie, Regan, Anna, Mae, Emery and Saydi the best of luck as they head off to college and into their next school and sports adventure,” they wrote on Mission Proper’s Facebook page. “We couldn’t be more proud of them and all they have learned and accomplished this summer here at Mission Proper! 💛”

“That said, we’re excited to welcome new people to our fun team! We’re looking for a few baristas and a chef who share our passion for delivering high-quality food, coffee and tea to our wonderful community.”

For those who love to cook, they are looking for “an optimistic, energetic individual who is passionate about preparing delicious, nutritious dishes. Experience in the kitchen is a must and curiosity about the world of coffee is a bonus! You will focus on light breakfast and lunch offerings, assisting with prep and inventory, and ensuring each dish leaves the kitchen with care and creativity.”

I spoke with Jennifer Kuhar, co-founder and owner of Mission Proper, who said this is a crucial time for them to generate the revenue they need to get the business through the quieter months. “If I don’t find additional staff, I may have to close more days than I’d like,” she says.

If you’ve ever met friends for coffee at Mission Proper or held meetings at the large table in the middle of the room, you know it’s much more than just a coffee shop. It’s a part of our community, and at its core, Jennifer is asking the community for support. “I think the residents of Old Mission Peninsula want us to thrive,” she says.

She points out that you don’t have to be young to work there! Jennifer wants to connect with people in the community who are retired or looking for meaningful employment. Maybe you’ve always secretly wanted to be a barista or have a passion for baking. She would love to hear from you.

“If you have experience as a barista, that’s great,” she notes, “but honestly, if you have heart, drive and a willingness to learn, we’re ready to train you to put joy in a cup and help create special moments for our guests.”

Mission Proper has been well received by the Old Mission Peninsula community and with a little extra support they can continue to serve Joy in a Cup for many more seasons.

If you would like to be part of a positive, healthy work environment where everyone feels valued, contact Jennifer at (email protected) (Hint: it’s “co” at the end, not “com”) Let them know what you’re interested in, what you’re passionate about, and why you want to join the Mission Proper team.

And if being a member of the team doesn’t fit into your life right now, help spread the word so we can all enjoy the beauty of Mission Proper for many years to come.

Be sure to check out their website and follow them on Facebook and Instagram.

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started the Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt called to provide local news to the Old Mission Peninsula community. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines such as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies’ Home Journal, all I really wanted to do was write about my own community, where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because the Old Mission Gazette is a “reader-supported newspaper” – meaning it only exists thanks to your financial support – I hope you’ll give us a few dollars when I mention your event, business, organization or news, or if you just enjoy reading about what’s happening at the OMP. In a time when local news is a thing of the past, supporting an independent local newspaper is more important than ever. Thank you for your support! – Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
