Solheim Cup 2024: Team Europe’s squad, captain’s selection and reserve golfers explored

Team Europe has selected its top 12 players to face the Americans at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in less than 20 days! The 12 players representing Europe at the Solheim Cup qualified in three ways: the first two were at the top of the Solheim Cup points list; the first was Esther Henseleit, who had a total of four top-10 finishes on the Ladies European Tour and the LPGA Tour this year. In addition, she was also a silver medalist at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

The second person selected via the points list was Charley Hull. She is a high-profile figure in the golf world and was named to the 2024 Solheim Cup squad after finishing in the top 20 at the AIG Women’s Open. The second way players automatically make Team Europe is via the top 6 in the Rolex rankings. These six players are Celine Boutier (9), Maja Stark (26), Linn Grant (27), Leona Maguire (33), Carlota Ciganda (34) and Madelene Sagstrom (39).

With eight spots filled, captain Suzann Pettersen had four players to choose from based on their performance since the conclusion of the 2023 Solheim Cup. Pettersen chose Georgia Hall as one of them, telling Sky Sports: “It might not be the biggest surprise, but she’s been on this team since the beginning. She’s a really tough player. That’s just something she’s naturally got.” The other three selected by the captains are Anna Nordqvist, who will play vice-captain as she also held that role last year, Emily Kristine Pedersen and Albane Valenzuela.

The European looks ready for the Solheim Cup and hopes to make history by winning the prestigious event four times in a row; no one has ever done that before. Pettersen has kept almost all of her 2023 pros on her team, but here are two pros who have been replaced.

Who from the 2023 Solheim team could make it to the 2024 edition?

Two professionals failed to return to the European side after successfully helping defend the Cup in 2023 at Finca Cortesin in Andalusia. The first was Gemma Dryburgh. She made her Solheim Cup debut in 2023 and was selected as captain’s pick after posting many top-25 finishes last season. However, in 2024, Dryburgh missed eight cuts and only had two top-10 finishes, earning her a relatively lower position in the Rolex Rankings or Solheim Cup Points List or making her the captain’s pick. She was replaced by another rookie in 2024, Albane Valenzuela.

Another professional player who did not make the 2024 European Solheim Cup squad is Caroline Hedwall. If she had been nominated, this would have been the Swedish professional’s fifth Solheim Cup appearance; she has already been part of the winning team four times. But the seven-time LET winner failed to impress the captain after repeatedly finishing outside the winner’s circle. Pettersen chose Georgia Hall as one of her favourites as she did not qualify automatically, and Esther Henseleit came into the team via the points list.

With 12 members selected, all that’s left for these players to do is try to beat the Americans again. But the other team has bigger names and players like Nelly Korda, who is having the best season so far. Who will win the coveted Solheim Cup this time? That remains to be seen.
