5 Fort Worth homes damaged after water from burst pipe shoots into the sky

According to authorities, water shot into the air from a burst water pipe in Fort Worth on Monday, damaging five houses and tearing down tree branches.

The 33-inch line supplies most of the city of Hurst’s water needs, so officials have asked residents to limit their water usage.

According to Fort Worth Water spokeswoman Mary Gugliuzza, an unidentified telecommunications contractor encountered the concrete and steel line around 10 a.m. while drilling on the north side of Trinity Boulevard.

That sent water flying, Gugliuzza said. As the water came down, it pelted the roofs of homes along Trinity Vista Trail, damaging five homes. No injuries were reported, she said.

“It’s a major transmission line and the water was under a lot of pressure,” Gugliuzza said. “Water has great power.”

One home was heavily damaged, Gugliuzza said, and the department is working to find temporary housing for affected residents while their home is repaired. Shingles were ripped from the roof and water was coming through the ceiling, Gugliuzza said.

The waterworks crew managed to close all valves by 1 p.m., Gugliuzza said.

She said about 20 households were initially without water, but by Monday evening, supplies had been restored. Efforts are now focused on repairing the damaged water main.

“Our priority is to get the water main back online,” Gugliuzza said. “Our emergency crews will work through the night and into tomorrow morning to make the repair as quickly as possible.”

Until the line is back in service, customers in the area may experience slightly lower water pressure, Gugliuzza wrote in a statement. After the repairs, it will take some time for the line to fill with water again, she said.

To keep the pressure on, the city of Hurst has asked residents to refrain from outdoor watering and limit water use to essentials until the line is repaired. The line, according to a city statement, provides most of the city’s water.
