Aug. 26 (UPI) – The Detroit Zoo is asking the public for help in naming a baby gorilla born at the zoo earlier this month.

The zoo announced Monday that Bandia, a first-time mother, had her baby born in early August and is a girl. Officials have narrowed down the list of possible names to six.

Visitors to the zoo’s website are asked to choose their favorite from the names Usala, which means “forest” in the Kikumu language; Amateka, which means “history” in the Kinyarwanda language; Mbere, which means “first” in Kinyarwanda; Lobéké, the name of a national park in Cameroon; and Motema, which means “heart” in the Lingala language.

The gorilla is the first to be born in the 96-year history of the Detroit Zoo.

“This has been an incredibly fun and exciting time for our entire animal care team,” said Mike Murray, vice president of biological sciences at the Detroit Zoological Society, in a press release. “Bandia is doing an amazing job as a first-time mother; the love, care and devotion she shows to her baby is simply remarkable. We continue to monitor her and the baby closely and so far everything has gone according to plan. We are really looking forward to seeing this baby grow and thrive here at the zoo.”
