California residents can add their driver’s license to Google and Apple Wallet

California is following the lead of Maryland’s mobile ID program. While the pilot program is currently underway, in the coming weeks all California residents will be able to add either their driver’s license or ID card to their Google or Apple Wallet.

“We’re partnering with two iconic California companies – Apple and Google – to bring people convenient, private and secure driver’s licenses and IDs right to their phones,” said California Governor Gavin Newsom. “This is a big step in our efforts to better serve all Californians by meeting people where they are and with the technology they use every day.”

How it works

By August 15, 2024, 500,000 Californians have signed up to participate in the mobile driver’s license pilot program, called “mDL.” Before the program is rolled out statewide, another million residents will be able to sign up for the pilot program.

The pilot is free—users must download the California DMV mobile app from either the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. From there, residents must either sign up or create an account with the DMV.

The app will then guide users through the process of scanning their driver’s license or national ID card. Residents who have both will need to select which one they want registered in their mDL.

Where can you use it?

Consumers using the mDL can use it as a valid form of identification in several scenarios.

First off, the airport! Instead of digging around in your bag for your driver’s license, you can simply open your phone’s wallet and present your mDL to a TSA agent. It’s important to note that not every airport accepts digital IDs. Check out the TSA’s official website for more information on which airports accept the latest technology.

Additionally, California residents over the age of 21 can enable “TruAge” in the DMV app, allowing them to use their mDL to purchase alcohol or other age-restricted products without showing a physical ID. The app generates a QR code that retailers can scan for age verification.

“We are continuing to expand the availability and acceptance of digital driver’s licenses and ID cards while ensuring the highest levels of security and data protection,” said DMV Director Steve Gordon.

No replacement for an identity card

Although the mDL will make things easier for consumers, it is not yet a complete replacement for a physical ID card.

California residents should continue to carry their physical driver’s license or identification card. Many businesses do not yet accept digital IDs, and law enforcement and state agencies will also require a physical ID in the future.
