Mariah Carey’s mother and sister die on the same day: “My heart is broken”

The mother and sister of R&B and pop superstar Mariah Carey both died on the same day over the weekend, the singer confirmed.

In a statement to People, Carey shared the unfortunate news regarding her mother Patricia and her sister Alison and recalled their last moments together.

“I am heartbroken to have lost my mother this past weekend. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life the same day,” revealed the 55-year-old Grammy winner. “I feel blessed to have been able to spend the last week with my mother before she passed away. I am grateful for everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”

Carey had a complicated relationship with her mother and her sister Alison, who spoke out about her grievances with her famous sister many times over the years. In 2016, Alison released a video to The Daily Mail She asked to be reunited with Mariah and for financial support to pay her medical bills. Alison had been battling addiction for many years and was HIV positive.

According to Carey’s memoirs The meaning of Mariah CareyAlison was a troubled teen mother who tried to literally sell young Mariah to a pimp. This and other actions during their youth led to the siblings becoming estranged.

As for her mother Patricia, Carey described their relationship as a combination of “betrayal” and “beauty.”

“But our story is one of betrayal and beauty. Of love and abandonment. Of sacrifice and survival. I have escaped from slavery several times, but I suspect a cloud of sadness will always hang over me, not just because of my mother, but because of our complicated journey together,” Carey wrote in the autobiography mentioned above. “It has caused me so much pain and confusion. Time has shown me that there is no point in trying to protect people who have never tried to protect me. Time and motherhood have finally given me the courage to honestly recognize what my mother was to me.”
