Brewers could add Cy Young winner and two-time All-Star to rotation in offseason

The Milwaukee Brewers may not have a true star this season, but the club could have one next year if a certain pitcher becomes a free agent.

The Brewers are in the top spot in the National League Central despite their starting pitcher woes, but this time next year the rotation could look very different. With the offseason fast approaching, it may be time for management to start thinking about potential targets, and the Cleveland Guardians have a pitcher set to join Milwaukee as a free agent this winter who would be a great addition.

“Shane Bieber underwent Tommy John surgery in April and isn’t expected back on the mound until next summer,” wrote The Athletic’s Jim Bowden. “He could wait to sign until he’s healthy, but it’s more likely a team will give him a two-year deal at a reduced rate and risk his rehabilitation, since when he’s good he’s a front-line starter.”

Bieber had a 3.80 ERA with a 107-to-34 strikeout-to-walk ratio, a .253 batting average against and a 1.23 WHIP in 128 innings in 21 games with the Guardians last season.

The 29-year-old would be a perfect fit for Milwaukee and could be within the club’s price range, as his 2024 season was derailed by Tommy John surgery.

The right-hander is expected to return just in time for the final stretch of the 2025 season, and if the Brewers can stay afloat until he returns to the mound, Bieber could play a big role in the final stretch to the postseason next year.

The Brewers rarely get the opportunity to sign a player of this caliber and will likely take advantage of the benefits of getting a first-string regular at a reasonable price.
