12-year-old girl dies after parents treat injuries with smoothies instead of medical attention

ATASCOSA COUNTY, Texas (WKRC) – A 12-year-old girl died because her mother and stepfather did not seek medical care after she sustained life-threatening injuries, but instead gave her smoothies to try to heal her.

Miranda Sipps was a cheerleader at Jourdanton Junior High School. According to NBC News, she was pronounced dead in the emergency room after rescue workers found her mother on the highway. Four days after her child suffered life-threatening injuries, the mother decided to call 911.

“She wasn’t speaking. She could basically just blink her eyes and move her hands a little bit for a period of four days,” Sheriff David Soward said, according to NBC News. “And they left her on a cot in the house.”

According to NBC News, Soward said the 12-year-old’s parents tried to treat her injuries with smoothies containing vitamins. The mother, 36-year-old Denise Balbaneda, and stepfather, 40-year-old Gerald Gonzales, were arrested Tuesday and charged with first-degree felony failure to appear.

According to NBC News, the final autopsy report was still pending Thursday. Authorities believe the couple did not seek medical attention because they did not want police to come to their home, and that is why the mother encountered emergency responders on the highway.
