Woman dies on first day of Burning Man 2024

Police are investigating the cause of death of a woman who was found unconscious on the first day of Burning Man 2024. Reno Gazette-Journal reports.

According to the event organizers, the unnamed woman was found unconscious in the Black Rock Desert in Nevada at 11:29 a.m. on Sunday (August 25). Attempts by rescue workers to save her life were unsuccessful.

Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen told the Reno Gazette-Journal that his deputies were notified of the death at 11:37 a.m. An investigation is ongoing until the cause and manner of death can be determined.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased,” the Pershing County Sheriff’s Office said. “This is the first reported death on the playa this year and unfortunately it happened on the first day.”

In a similar statement, Burning Man said it would not release further details out of respect for the privacy of the grieving family and offered counseling services to participants.

At last year’s Burning Man festival, a man was found unconscious while record-breaking rain forced over 70,000 people to seek shelter from the cold, although weather conditions are not believed to have contributed to his death.

Burning Man 2024 is scheduled to run until September 2nd. Around 70,000 visitors are expected.
