Corps of Engineers predicts water depths for 2024

According to forecasts by the US Army Corps of Engineers, the water levels of Lake Erie will fall as temperatures begin to drop in the coming months.

In July, the water level reached a high of 573.03 feet and a low of 572.80 feet. The July water levels are above the long-term average of 572.01 feet.

These levels were well below the record levels set in 2019, when Lake Erie reached a depth of 574.21 feet, but above the lowest level ever recorded, set in 1934, when the depth was reported at 569 feet.

The water level for August is still above the long-term average of 571.82 feet.

Water levels show no signs of significant change, but the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers predicts that levels will begin to decline in the coming months.

Lake Erie water levels in August

Lake water levels measured between August 1 and 25 ranged from a maximum depth of 572.97 feet to a minimum depth of 572.51 feet.

Levels are similar to those in July but show signs of decline.

What will the water level of Lake Erie be in the coming months?

Here are the U.S. Army Corps’ water level forecasts for Lake Erie for the next five months:

  • September: Upper level 572.64 feet, lower level 571.59 feet.
  • October: Upper level 572.37 feet, lower level 571.13 feet.
  • November: Upper levels 572.24 feet, lower levels 570.8 feet.
  • December: Upper level 572.37 feet, lower level 570.80 feet.
