“I get the ball out quickly”

“I get the ball out quickly”

The Miami Dolphins’ offensive line has been under scrutiny for… well… a long time, but quarterback Tua Tagovailoa isn’t worried about it – at least not publicly.

In his weekly media session on Monday, Tagovailoa was asked about his confidence in his offensive line and he promptly responded: “Well, brother, I play the ball out fast, so I trust everybody we have up front, I can tell you that. I trust everybody we have up front.”

Tua is certainly not wrong when he says he can get the ball out quickly, which is obviously one of his strengths. That’s also why analytics show he had the lowest average pocket time in the NFL last season at 2.1 seconds.

According to another set of data, the Dolphins ranked 31st in the NFL in pass blocking win percentage, even though a “win” in that category requires holding a block for 2.5 seconds, longer than Tua often lost the ball.

The Dolphins’ game plan consists of a lot of very quick throws, maximizing the speed of the fast skill position players and minimizing the need for top-notch pass protection.

The problem with Tua’s comment is that it does matter who is protecting the pass when Tyreek Hill or Jaylen Waddle can’t get free quickly against better opponents and Tua has to hold onto the ball a little longer despite his quick release.

And the Dolphins’ offensive line is definitely in transition less than two weeks before the start of the regular season.

Left tackle Terron Armstead, the best player on the line, has barely practiced all summer. Projected left guard Isaiah Wynn will begin the season as a PUP. Probable center Aaron Brewer will be out for a few weeks.

As we discussed a week or two ago, the Dolphins offensive line doesn’t seem to have the personnel to be a top lineup in the NFL, but the scheme is designed to help them mislead in the run game and make quick throws.

And this is exactly where it is definitely helpful that Tua plays the ball out quickly.
