9-year-old girl had the tip of her nose bitten off in a dog attack in Glasgow

A nine-year-old girl required emergency surgery after a dog mauled her face, a court heard.

The child’s mother described how the Staffordshire Bull Terrier pulled her daughter to the ground in a Glasgow flat in June 2022 and bit off the tip of her nose.

She was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where skin behind her ear was removed to create a “new nose”.

Callum Campbell, 24, was found guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court of keeping a dog that was dangerously out of control.

The court heard the girl and her mother had visited Campbell’s home in Maryhill to see his mother before an upcoming dance competition.

While the women were chatting, Campbell went into the kitchen to get a drink and the dog appeared in the living room doorway, staring at her.

“The dog was like a statue and before I knew it, he was on top of me and my little daughter,” the witness said.

“The dog was pretty strong and grabbed my little girl. I tried to save her. He growled.

“My little girl was dragged from her chair across the living room floor to the floor.

“The dog ripped off my little daughter’s nose.”

The woman said Campbell’s mother yelled, “Why did you let the dog out?”

He replied that he thought he had closed the door.

The girl had to stay in hospital for four nights and missed the dance competition that took place two days after the incident.

She has since received therapy to treat her fear of dogs and has a scar on her nose.

The mother said Campbell claimed that his dog was not responsible for the attack.

Defense attorney Michael Tierney told the witness that she had misunderstood him, but she denied this.

Sheriff Mary Shields has stayed sentencing for Campbell until next month, pending background reports, and he has been granted bail.
