Are Linkin Park getting back together? This is what we know so far

There have been big rumors about a possible Linkin Park reunion since spring this year, and a countdown timer on the band’s social media has only increased the excitement. So what do we actually know about a possible Linkin Park reunion?

About the countdown timer

Linkin Park posted a countdown timer on their social media on Saturday (August 26th) that started at 100 hours. For those who want to know: The countdown ends on Wednesday (August 28th).

Who shared the timer on social media?

In addition to Linkin Park, Mike Shinoda, Joe Hahn, Dave “Phoenix” Farrell and Brad Delson have shared the countdown timer on at least one of their social media platforms. Drummer Rob Bourdon has stayed off social media. A Linkin Park fan site also found that the Welcome to Rockville festival’s X-Account also shared the countdown for a time on Saturday, fueling speculation that the band could perform at the 2025 edition of the festival.

The spring hype about a reunion … with a singer

In April, Orgy frontman Jay Gordon revealed in an interview that Linkin Park would reunite and hire a female lead singer, although he later attempted to walk back the remark: “Don’t quote me on that. I’m not sure who the singer will be, but I’ve heard it’s going to be a woman. Maybe they’ll just try to keep going like that. That should be interesting.”

Later that month, Evanescence’s Amy Lee responded to rumors that she would become Linkin Park’s new singer, calling it an “incredible compliment,” but also denying the story. “No, I haven’t been contacted (by Linkin Park) or anything. But (I’m) a huge fan (and) feel like our worlds, our fan bases are mostly made up of the same people.”

In May, Billboard reported that Linkin Park are considering a reunion tour in 2025, again mentioning a female lead singer and hinting at the involvement of three members from the classic era: singer/guitarist Mike Shinoda, lead guitarist/keyboardist Brad Delson, and bassist Dave Farrell. Perhaps Hahn could be in on the act, too, as he reshares the countdown on social media.

Linkin Park since 2017

Linkin Park have not performed live since a tribute concert for lead singer Chester Bennington on October 27, 2017. Bennington committed suicide on July 20, 2017, less than two weeks after his last performance with the group.

The band took a break after Bennington’s death and, with the exception of interview appearances to promote the 20th anniversary editions of Hybrid theory And Meteorathey were relatively quiet.

Mike Shinoda was the most famous band member and started a solo career, which included the album “2018”. Posttraumatic Album and 2020’s Dropped frames which was inspired by fan interactions on his Twitch channel. Shinoda and Phoenix Farrell performed together on stage at a 2018 Halloween concert.

Shinoda has also flexed his production talents, interacting with fans on social media to find undiscovered talent to produce singles that won’t appear on an album in 2021. He has also produced Demi Lovato and PRVIS in 2023.

Joe Hahn has been relatively quiet. In 2018, he produced a video for Steve Aoki and BTS and then added his own touch to Linkin Park’s “Friendly Fire” video in 2024.

In 2023, Dave “Phoenix” Farrell told Kevin Vargas of Loudwire Nights that it was his personal wish to do something with the band again, although he insisted that nothing was currently planned.

“It’s five guys who are in very different places. We’re still close. We stay in touch. There’s no animosity whatsoever, which is great. These guys mean so much to me in my life and are really the only ones who can empathize with some of the crazy stuff I’ve been through, so each of them has a special place in my heart,” Farrell said of the band’s current state, before adding, “Everyone is going their own way and everyone has a different perspective when it comes to the band.”

He then continued, “Other than that, I think, just for myself, there’s more stuff I want to do with the band at some point. There’s no immediate plan. There’s no process that’s started or worked out in any way, shape or form, but I think at some point we’ll have more to say and I think we want to do more stuff, whatever that means.”

Farrell also addressed the idea of the band honoring Bennington’s memory and legacy, noting, “With anything involving Chester, it has to pass a heart check first and foremost. Does it fit with something we think he would love or be a part of or be into? If that’s even a little bit shaky, then it just feels gross.”
