Woman dies on first day of Burning Man after disastrous start of doomed festival

On the first day of the Burning Man festival, a woman died mysteriously, just hours after thousands crowded into the desert camp.

She was found unconscious at 11:29 a.m. on Sunday and “immediate life-saving measures were attempted but were unsuccessful,” festival organizers said.

The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office arrived, confirmed the woman’s death, and began an investigation “until the cause and manner of death can be determined.”

“The participant’s name is being withheld at this time until the next of kin of the deceased can be notified,” said Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased.”

“This is the first reported death on the beach this year and unfortunately it happened on the first day.”

How the woman died and the circumstances of her death are not yet known.

Burning Man organizers said counseling services would be available at the festival for anyone who needed them.
