Jorge Delgado sets his sights on the Breeders’ Cup with Power Squeeze

Crossing Union Rags with Callmethesqueeze by Awesome Again was a successful experiment, producing the plucky chestnut mare Power Squeeze. At three years old and with a record of six wins in ten starts, she has given her trainer Jorge Delgado his tenth victory in a graded stakes race and his seventh in 2024, setting a record for any Venezuelan trainer on the competitive U.S. racing scene.

Born in Kentucky in April 2021 and raised under the care of Patricia Pevlish, Power Squeeze races for Lea Farms LLC. Her trainer, impressed with her winning streak, has high hopes for what they can accomplish in the Breeders’ Cup, an event for which the mare continues to earn qualifying points. The combination of Power Squeeze and Delgado – a male descended from Venezuelan master trainers – embodies a Venezuelan heritage and has earned multiple victories under the tutelage of Daniel Centeno and, more recently, with Hall of Famer Javier Castellano.

Of the 344 victories in Delgado’s record, this outstanding chestnut mare’s six wins are among the most significant as they include challenging races in the United States such as the Delaware Oaks (Grade 3), the Gulfstream Park Oaks (Grade 2) presented by FanDuel TV and the Alabama Stakes (Grade 1) presented by Keeneland Sales at Saratoga with Castellano in the saddle.

Power Squeeze is a mare with plenty of heart who likes to keep up with the pace and has won each of her successful races with a short but effective finishing sprint. Despite her strong performances, she continues to surprise with her impressive payouts at the betting counter, something that will most likely change in her future races.

All of Power Squeeze’s connections hope to compete in the country’s most prestigious horse racing championship – the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff – despite her defeats to the exceptional Thorpedo Anna. “The rapid development she shows in every race forces us to dream big,” concluded Delgado.
