Kazakhstan and Germany cooperate in the areas of water and agriculture

During a visit to Germany last week, Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev met with representatives of the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture to discuss the possibility of introducing Kazakh agricultural and organic products to the German market.

The parties agreed to develop a concept for the Regional Center for Sustainable Agriculture in Central Asia, an initiative that the President of Kazakhstan had already announced during his official visit to Germany in September 2023.

Following the meeting of the Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister with Boris Greifeneder, Managing Director of the German Water Partnership (GWP), it was decided to draw up an agreement on a water partnership between Kazakhstan and Germany.

The cooperation with GWP, a network of over 300 water management companies with a strong international focus, represents an important step towards sustainable and efficient water management in Kazakhstan and enables the use of proven new technologies.

Speaking at the panel discussion “Water for Sustainable Development,” Bozumbayev noted that the consequences of the unprecedented floods Kazakhstan experienced in the spring highlight the need for innovative approaches to combating and preventing similar disasters in the future. In this regard, he added that Kazakhstan is currently testing Talsim, a German digital flood forecasting solution, and is ready to study German cases in solving flood problems.

The Kazakhstani Deputy Prime Minister discussed the training of specialists for the Kazakhstani water management sector and, in return, the German side expressed its readiness to find a university that could cooperate with the newly established Kazakhstani National University of Water Management and Irrigation in Taraz.
