The latest South Carolina Gamecocks news from the last week, starting with some personnel updates from the football team

Expectations were confirmed when head coach Shane Beamer announced that LaNorris Sellers would be the starting quarterback in the season opener against Old Dominion.

Fellow quarterback Davis Beville received a scholarship. The sixth-grader gave up a scholarship spot to stay with the Oklahoma Sooners and join the Gamecocks in his home state. He is expected to be the third quarterback in the lineup.

Wide receiver Ahmari Huggins-Bruce is no longer with the Gamecocks. After transferring from Louisville to the University of South Carolina in the offseason, Huggins-Bruce seemed unable to conquer the No. 2 receiver spot on the depth chart this fall. He has transferred back to Louisville and is trying to get back on the Cardinals’ football team.

Offensive linemen Jakai Moore and Aaryn Parks will not play this weekend against the Old Dominion Monarchs and could miss some time. Both players were competing for spots in the two-deep front but were not expected to be starters.

Wide receiver Gage Larvadain and defensive back Emory Floyd are both injured, according to Coach Beamer, but are expected to be back in action this weekend.

Several players from Shane Beamer’s team received awards ahead of the season.

Five Gamecocks made the Coaches’ All-SEC team this preseason. Long snapper Hunter Rogers (1st team), running back Rocket Sanders (2nd team), linebacker Debo Williams (2nd team), defensive back Nick Emmanwori (3rd team) and defensive lineman Tonka Hemingway (3rd team) all received the league’s coaches’ honor.

The Gamecocks’ 5-star freshmen Dylan Stewart and Josiah Thompson were both named to the Freshmen All-American teams multiple times during the preseason. Thompson was selected by ESPN, On3 and 247Sports, while Stewart was selected by On3 and 247Sports.

The Lamont Paris South Carolina basketball team has finalized its schedule for the 2024-2025 season.

There was no news from Dawn Staley’s team this week, but there was some news from some former Gamecock players.

Coach Staley presented former player A’ja Wilson with the 2024 WNBA Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award for her outstanding achievements on the court and in her community.

A’ja Wilson also continued to dominate the WNBA, setting several new records and scoring the decisive goal on Sunday against the Chicago Sky.

Kamilla Cardoso set new career highs in rebounds (15) and blocked shots (5) last week. On Sunday, she blocked A’ja Wilson five times, setting the record for most blocks against Wilson in a single game.

Aliyah Boston set a new career high with 8 assists against the Seattle Storm.

The University of South Carolina inducts a distinguished class of 9 into the USC Letterman’s Association Hall of Fame.

Melvin Ingram (football), Pharoh Cooper (football), Tommy Moody (baseball, broadcasting), Tiffany Mitchell (basketball), Jocelyn Penn (basketball), Bob Kaczka (track and field, cross country), Jason Richardson (track and field), Shalonda Solomon (track and field) and Dana Fulmer (softball) will be officially inducted on November 1 and recognized the next day when the South Carolina football team takes on the Texas A&M Aggies at Williams-Brice Stadium.
