Tourist dies after ice collapse in Iceland’s Breidamerkurjökull glacier

A foreign tourist died in southern Iceland when ice collapsed on a glacier during his group’s visit, local media reported.

A second tourist was injured but was taken to hospital and is out of danger. Two others are still missing.

Rescue workers have resumed the search for the missing person in the Breidamerkurjökull glacier after suspending the operation overnight due to difficult conditions.

When a group of 25 people visited an ice cave on Sunday accompanied by a guide, ice collapsed.

Rescue workers tried to rescue the missing people by hand.

Shortly before 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, the rescue team was informed of the collapse.

“A large number of rescue workers and helpers were involved in the operation,” police said on Monday, adding that conditions were “difficult.”

Local news agencies reported that 200 people were involved in the rescue operation at one point on Sunday. Dozens returned on Monday morning and more are expected throughout the day.

Police Chief Rúnarsson stated on Icelandic television that the police had not been able to make contact with the two missing people.

Although the conditions were “difficult,” the weather was “nice,” he said on Sunday evening.

He confirmed that all those involved were foreign tourists and said there was no evidence that the trip to the cave should not have taken place.

“Ice cave tours take place almost all year round,” he said

“These are experienced and competent mountain guides who lead these trips. You can always get unlucky. I trust that these people assess the situation – when it is safe or not to go, and over time they have done a good job. This is a living country, so anything can happen.”

The police chief was quoted as saying that people were standing in a ravine between cave entrances when a wall of ice collapsed.

Breidamerkurjökull is a glacier tongue that stretches from the Vatnajökull glacier to the Jökulsárlón lagoon. The glacier tongue is famous for its ice caves, which groups offer guided tours of.
