Six players without international caps in the Eagles squad for the Pacific Nations Cup

Scott Lawrence has named six uncapped players in his 31-man Eagles squad for the upcoming Pacific Nations Cup. The USA will hold a 10-day training camp in Chula Vista before hosting Canada in Los Angeles on August 31 and Japan in Kumagaya on September 7. Depending on the results, at least one and possibly two more Tests will be played.

Five of the new recruits play in Major League Rugby. Hookers Cyrille Cama (San Diego) and Sean McNulty (Miami), tighthead prop Pono Davis (Houston), second row William Waguespack (NOLA) and outside back Toby Fricker (New England) are the first senior Eagles players. McNulty previously played for Ireland at U20 level, while Fricker played for Wales in the Rugby Europe 7s.

Rand Santos, standout player for the Cal Golden Bears, is the sixth newcomer. He comes directly from the US team that was a finalist in the U20 Cup. The flyhalf or fullback will be supported by U20 co-captain Dom Besag, who has already played center twice for the Eagles in 2023.

Others recalled after missing the July Test series include forward trio Moni Tonga’uiha (NOLA), Cory Daniel (DC) and Jason Damm (Los Angeles). The latter is expected to cover the second row, with only two specialist locks included. Cheetahs scrumhalf Ruben de Haas and San Diego all-rounder Chris Mattina return to the team after long-term injury.

There is also a list of 14 reserve players not travelling, including a further eight players without international experience. Bristol link-up AJ MacGinty is the most notable on a 21-player injured or unavailable list that also includes Toulouse prop David Ainu’u, North Harbour hacker Shilo Klein and the France-based centre-back pairing of Nafi Ma’afu (Biarritz) and Renger van Eerten (Brive).
