A woman died on the first day of the Burning Man festival.

“Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and friends who have suffered this loss,” the Burning Man Project said in a statement.

According to the Burning Man Project, Burning Man’s emergency response team was called to an unresponsive person at 11:29 a.m. Sunday morning. They attempted life-saving measures, but the person was unresponsive.

The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a possible death by the team at 11:37 a.m., according to Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the deceased,” he wrote.

The death remains under investigation while the cause and circumstances of death are determined. The sheriff said he will not release the name until next of kin are identified.

Sunday was the first day of the week-long event in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, which describes itself as “a temporary metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression and empowerment.”

The Burning Man Project offered support to the community affected by this event, including Black Rock Rangers available 24/7 at the headquarters at 5:45 am and on the Esplanade, as well as at outposts behind the plazas at 3:00 am and 9:00 am to provide peer support services.

“The safety and well-being of our employees and community is our top priority,” the project wrote.
