Thane, Aug 26 (PTI) – Two unidentified persons posed as Crime Branch officials and tricked a 70-year-old man into taking away his gold jewellery worth Rs 70,000 in Thane district, police said on Monday.

The incident occurred on August 24 at around 11:15 am when the victim, Damodar Patil, was travelling by car on the Nashik-Mumbai highway near Lodha Dham.

The suspects stopped Patil’s car under the pretext of a security check and asked him to remove his gold jewellery, wrap it in paper and place it in the dashboard drawer of the car.

While chatting with Patil, the two exchanged the wrapped ornaments for a package of stones. The men then left the scene and Patil later discovered the fraud when he checked the package, police said.

An FIR was registered at Narpoli police station after Patil filed a complaint under sections 318(4) (cheating), 204 (impersonating a public servant) and 3(5) (an offence committed by several persons with common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). Police are investigating the incident but no arrests have been made so far. PTI COR NSK
