US women win silver at the 2024 Pan Am Cup

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (August 25, 2024) –The United States women’s national team won the silver medal at the 2024 NORCECA Pan American Cup after a 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-19) loss to Argentina in the gold medal match on Sunday. in Leon, Mexico.

The USA won six straight matches to reach the gold medal match, losing only two sets. With their 15th medal, including seven gold and three silver, the USA remains the most successful team in Pan Am Cup history. The silver medal was the third for the US women’s national team this summer, following runner-up finishes at the Paris Olympics and the NORCECA Final Six.

The USA finished the match with a 39-35 lead in kills, but Argentina benefited from 21 errors by the USA, despite only making 12 of their own. Argentina had the advantage in blocks (12-5) and service aces (7-1).

Libero Zoe Fleck had the most digs of the game with 20 and led the USA with nine successful pass catches. Outside attacker Roni Jones-Perry led all players with 13 kills and added seven successful pass catches and six digs. Outside attacker Claire Hoffman finished the game with six successful pass catches and outside attacker Logan Eggleston recorded five successful pass catches and four digs in the third set.

Middle blocker Serena Gray (seven kills, two blocks and an ace) and opponent Kendall Kipp (eight kills, two blocks) also scored double figures with 10 points each. Kipp and setter Jenna Gray each contributed six digs, while Serena Gray added five.

Middle Tia Jimerson scored eight points with seven kills and one block, Hoffman had three points with kills and setter Ella Powell recorded one kill.

Argentina scored the first three points of the opening set and never trailed, leading by four at 11-7 before the USA scored three straight points on a kill by Jones-Perry and consecutive blocks by Kipp and Serena Gray. Leading by just two points (19-17), Argentina closed the second set on a 6-1 run. Kipp led all players with seven points on five kills and two blocks.

Hoffman and Jones-Perry scored kills and an Argentina hitting error gave the USA a 3-0 run and an 11-8 lead in the second set. Argentina responded by scoring seven of the next eight points to take a 15-12 lead. Serena Gray and Jones-Perry scored the next two points to cut the lead to one point, but Argentina took a 9-4 lead. The USA defended two set points before losing the set. Jones-Perry led the USA with five kills.

The USA took a quick 10-5 lead in the third set before Argentina went on a 12-2 run to make it 17-12. The lead grew to six points, 21-15, before the USA cut the deficit in half by scoring the next three points. Argentina scored the next three points and four of the last five to win the gold medal. Jones-Perry scored five kills and Serena Gray added four points with three kills and an ace.
