Four new living allowances will be issued on all dates

UK households will receive support in the form of four new living costs payments in June and July. The Government announced this new wave of financial support following the end of the previous living costs payments administered by the DWP.

Instead, it will use the Household Support Fund, renewed in the Spring Budget. This approach allows central government to provide funding to local authorities, who can then distribute it according to their own eligibility criteria. Wakefield Borough Council is one of those authorities that has announced the details of its scheme. It plans to issue a £75 supermarket voucher to all households currently receiving council tax support.

Pensioners will receive the first £75 voucher between June 3 and 12, 2024. Disabled people will then receive their voucher between June 17 and 26, followed by all other households except families with one child on June 28. Finally, families with at least one child will receive their vouchers on July 18, the Express reports.

The Household Support Fund doesn’t just offer vouchers, the council has announced that direct support will also be provided for those struggling with the cost of toiletries, baby supplies, essential bills such as utilities and phone, gas and electricity, clothing and household appliances such as fridges and washing machines.

Sheffield and Leeds City Councils, among others, offer direct financial support through their websites.

Leeds City Council explains: “We will make a one-off payment of either £75 or £100 to households in Leeds receiving Council Tax Support. Households with children and retired households will receive £100 and working-age households without children will receive £75.”

Every local authority in the UK runs a slightly different scheme – each with different eligibility requirements and payouts. Many are expected to announce their own schemes this week, so it’s worth checking with your local authority to see if you’re eligible for the fund where you live.
