Monsoon-related disasters have already claimed 203 lives this year – myRepublica

KATHMANDU, Aug 25: The death toll from monsoon-related disasters in the country has risen to 203 since June 10 this year. Nepal Police confirmed the death toll from June 10 to Sunday afternoon.

Three people died in Kathmandu Valley, 28 in Koshi province, eight in Madhes province and 42 in Bagmati province, Nepal Police Central Spokesperson DIG Dan Bahadur Karki said.

Similarly, 56 deaths were recorded in Gandaki province, 37 in Lumbini province, 13 in Karnali province and 16 in Sudurpaschim province, DIG Karki said.

Karki further stated that 251 people were injured in landslides and floods during this period, including 11 in Kathmandu Valley, 38 in Koshi Province, 12 in Madhesh Province and 28 in Bagmati Province.

In addition, 47 injured were reported from Gandaki province, 19 from Lumbini province, 62 from Karnali province and 34 from Sudurpaschim province.

Thanks to the rescue efforts of the security authorities, 210 vulnerable people have been rescued in various locations since the beginning of the monsoon this year.

However, 154 people are still missing and search operations are on, added DIG Karki.

According to police, the disasters caused flooding and damage to numerous infrastructure facilities, including 408 houses, 123 cowsheds, 52 bridges, six schools and two government buildings.

Meanwhile, 924 livestock were lost in the floods and landslides. The disasters have left 6,044 households homeless in the past two months, police said.
