North Allegheny Notebook: Tigers golf girls off to strong start

The North Allegheny girls golf team opened the season with a 5-1 record and a 4-0 mark in Section 1-3A.

The Tigers have wins against Mt. Lebanon (195-195), Mars (182-201), Butler (173-193), Blackhawk (176-180) and Shaler (192-214) and losses to Fox Chapel (181-195).

In the victory over Shaler on August 20 at the Diamond Run Golf Course, Kayli Dings scored 41 strokes and Omisa Shah led with 45. Kirsten Karlovits (52), Grace Means (54) and Ava Azzanni (57) completed the score.

The Tigers also placed third at the North Allegheny Tiger Invitational on August 18, also at Diamond Run.

Dings secured the medal in the 27-hole event, shooting 8-over-par 115 to edge out Siena Smith (116) of Pine-Richland. Shah finished 15th (145), followed by Karlovits in 17th and Azzanni in 26th.

Pine-Richland won the team title with a score of 389, followed by Armstrong (394), North Allegheny (405), McDowell (406), Seneca Valley (442), North Catholic (449) and Beaver (472).

Golf boys open with 6:0

The North Allegheny boys golf team also started the season undefeated.

The Tigers defeated Seneca Valley 193-199 on August 20 at Cranberry Highlands Golf Course to move to a 6-0 overall record and 3-0 in Section 3-3A.

Colin Ward played 1 over par 36 and secured the medal. Charlie Burbick (38), Chris Hoffman (39), Ravi Desai (39) and Preston Troiano (41) also scored for the Tigers. Liam Cooper played 44. The substitutes Mike Huet (38) and Kyle Seidl (44) also took part.

North Allegheny’s other wins came against Fox Chapel, Mars, Mt. Lebanon, Shady Side Academy and Butler.

NA swimmers receive awards

Five members of the 2023-24 North Allegheny swim team were named to the NISCA All-American team earlier this month.

The team is determined based on the compilation of the fastest times nationwide.

Honored were two-time WPIAL gold medalist William Gao (100 yards butterfly), WPIAL and PIAA gold medalist Natalie Sens (100 breaststroke), WPIAL gold medalist Claire Bacu (500 freestyle), and divers Lola Malarky and Juliet Hood, who took first and second place, respectively, at the WPIAL meet.

Also honored were:

• The North American boys’ 200-meter medley relay team of Gao, Grant Regule, Riley Williams and Gus Miller, who were WPAL champions.

• The WPIAL girls’ 200-meter individual medley champions of Sens, Greta Mott, Tori Tieppo and Eva Ogden.

• The boys’ 200 freestyle relay team of Danny Lesinski, Regule, Williams and Totin won a WPIAL title.

• The WPIAL girls 200 freestyle relay champions of Sens, Ogden, Bacu and Julianne Weaver.

• And the WPIAL silver medalists in the boys 400 freestyle relay event with Gao, Williams, Josh Berty and Zachary Totin.

The group helped North Allegheny win the WPIAL boys and girls championships. The girls went on to win the PIAA championship as well.

Trunzo receives All-America honor

Izzie Trunzo, a 2024 North Allegheny graduate, received honorable mention on the All-America water polo team.

The Gannon product was a first-team all-state selection last season and was named the state’s Goalkeeper of the Year, making 711 saves in her career, including 254 in her senior year.
